Attachment Anxiety: Will It Hurt to Have My Invisalign Attachments Removed?

Attachment Anxiety: Will It Hurt to Have My Invisalign Attachments Removed?

One of the biggest misconceptions about Invisalign is that the teeth-straightening process is conducted entirely with clear aligners. While that’s sometimes the case, it’s very common for other orthodontic accessories to be used, like attachments. These give the trays something to grip onto, ensuring even patients with more moderate misalignment get the beautiful results they deserve. But does it hurt to have the attachments removed? Read on to find out!

So, Does It Hurt to Remove Invisalign Attachments?

Oftentimes, when the drill comes out, a patient’s heartbeat starts to go up. If that’s the case for you, we have good news: it does NOT hurt to remove the attachments! Your orthodontist will simply buff away the resin until it’s gone; you won’t feel any pain or discomfort during the process.

How to Prevent an Invisalign Attachment from Breaking

The easiest way to prevent an attachment from breaking is by being selective about what you eat. With this in mind, avoid hard pretzels, caramel popcorn, and other extremely crunchy foods that have basically no nutritional value. Instead, fill your plate with softer foods, like cooked carrots, plain yogurt, oatmeal, and scrambled eggs.

Important note: Throughout your orthodontic treatment, your attachments may begin to wear down. This is completely normal, and something your orthodontist will keep an eye out for at your routine visits. What is not normal, however, is an attachment chipping or breaking off completely. This is considered an orthodontic emergency, so get an appointment on the calendar ASAP to avoid unwanted treatment plan delays.

Ultimately, even if you’ve had braces in the past, you may have a question or two about what to expect during your Invisalign treatment. Rest assured, your orthodontist and their team are there to help, so don’t hesitate to reach out to them if you have any questions or concerns!
